Why servers use linux

Next thing is open source. This is really important for us at Flaunt Digital. We love contributing back to the open source community and we love making use of open source platforms and open source software so whether this is PHP, MySQL, or Ubuntu.

These are all open source packages or operating systems that are all really well supported by other open source systems. So the integration between these open source packages is much greater than an open source package with a closed source operating system such as Windows or Mac OS. Another one which is a little bit contentious is security. And now this is a bit of a tradeoff here because with open source software, generally, the source code is available for anyone to read.

So, that means security researchers or corporate backers of the open source community can read and amend this code or they can find bugs much quicker whereas closed source software is obviously only available to review or fix from an internal point of view. Whereas with things like Linux or Ubuntu or packages that go into that software anyone can read that and contribute back to it. Linux OS is the most flexible operating system out there as you can customize the system based on all your requirements.

With Linux you can do whatever you want as you can install GUI interface or manage the server using a terminal alone. With Linux you are offered various tools and utilities to choose from to manage all your server related activities like adding users, manage the services and the network, install new applications and monitor the performance etc. Shell is the most powerful component in the Linux system as that allow you to run various other programs and also allows you interact the kernel.

Overall, linux provides you the complete control over the server. When it comes to Total cost of ownership, nothing can beat Linux as the software is completely free. Even when you go for an enterprise version, it will cost you much less than Windows or any other licensed software. And these licensed software comes with their limitations including user-based licensing, expensive add-ons etc.

And with Linux you are not forced upon by products and services by commercial vendors as you are free to choose the products that suits your requirements. It is this kind of that freedom that has made even large corporations like Amazon and Google to choose linux based servers for their services. Linux opens up a world of possibilities for open source applications as there are thousands of open source applications out there that is waiting to be explored.

You can even run a Windows application in Linux server with the use of a special interface. Windows, on the other hand, will slow down the server eventually if the system is not rebooted after a certain period of time. On top of that, Windows servers also need to be restarted after a major update , which will add to the downtime.

Other than these, perhaps the most important and the most common reason why commercial servers are better off with Linux lies with its open-source nature itself. The level of user control Linux offers is unmatched and provides the perfect environment for coders to work with, helping them develop features, tools, etc. TMCnet Feature. April 05,
